Yes, there are three things you can do prior to your baby's birth:
- Schedule the initial meeting with the Sacraments Coordinator to complete necessary paperwork
- Attend Baptism Prep class on the 2nd Tuesday of the month (pre-registration required)
- Think about who you could ask to be your child's godparent(s)/sponsor and ask them to complete the Sponsor Verification form

Yes, Baptism Preparation Class is offered on the 2nd Tuesday of every month for first-time parents/godparents and families who have not attended a prep class within the past 5 years. Pre-registration is required and there is no cost to attend. Please call the Parish Office to sign up at 207-217-6740 x1300.

Once you have met with the Coordinator, attended Baptism Prep Class, and turned in the godparent(s) Sponsor Verification form(s), it will be time to schedule your child's baptism. Baptisms are typically scheduled after daily/weekly masses or on Saturday morning at any of our Parish churches. If you have a requested cleric, church location, or specific day/time, please let the Sacraments Coordinator know your preferences at the initial meeting.

Godparent(s)/sponsor(s) must meet the following canonical qualifications:
- be at least 16 years of age
- have received the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Eucharist
- strive to live as a faithful witness to Jesus Christ--especially by participating in Holy Mass at least every week and on holy days of obligation--and by receiving the sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) at least once per year
- If married, be in a valid marriage (wedding witnessed by a Catholic Priest or Deacon in a Catholic Church). If single, not cohabiting--living together in a sexual relationship outside of marriage.
The Sponsor Verification form for godparents/sponsors can be printed here. Completed form(s) must be returned to St. Paul the Apostle Parish before your child's baptism can be scheduled. Godparents may be represented "by proxy" if they cannot attend the baptism in person. If there are two godparents, one must be male and one female. If you have questions or are having trouble finding someone to fill the role of godparent, please contact the Sacraments Coordinator at 207-217-6740 x1300. We have parishioners often willing to help!

Children up to age 7 are welcome to begin the normal baptism intake process by contacting the Sacraments Coordinator. Children older than 8 years of age are invited to meet with the Pastoral Life Coordinator to learn more about the Christian Initiation process. Classes are held weekly on Wednesday evenings from late summer to early spring.
Teens or adults interested in receiving the sacraments or making a profession of faith as a Catholic are invited to inquire about the Order of Christian Initiation for Adults (OCIA). Please call the parish office at (207) 217-6740 x1007 to learn more about this process.

It is not uncommon for families living outside of the Bangor area to desire baptism at St. Paul the Apostle Parish. Permission from the pastor in the town/city/state/country where you reside is required, as well as evidence of having attending a Baptism Preparation class.
